SCREAMIN LEHMAN BAND

  • Composed of six highly-talented players originating from every facet of rock music, SCREAMIN’ LEHMAN brings more than a century of combined musical experience to the growing genre of modern bands playing classic rock.

As you read the individual biographies you’ll discover a veritable cross section of musical styles, tastes, and genres that represent nearly every aspect of contemporary music.  But what makes this band so special is that no matter what musical style they play it sounds original even though they make it their own.  While it may seem unusual to see songs by Boz Scaggs, The Cars, Steely Dan,  Stevie Winwood, and Elvin Bishop on the same set list, this exotic mix of the best of classic rock is what makes this band exactly what it is, a versatile group of dedicated musicians who can capture in a live performance all the authentic sounds of those many different types of music.

Formed in 2006 by keyboardist “Screamin’” Steve Lehman along with childhood friend Bernie Reed on lead vocals and bass, this band was put together with the simple goal of playing covers that no other cover bands play.  The group went through a short evolutionary phase in early 2007 and by late winter emerged into final form with the additions of drummer Steve Matyas, rhythm guitarist Scott Williams, and lead guitarist Scott White.  Grammy award-winning lead vocalist Royce Jones became the band’s newest member this past summer and now completes the ensemble.

Keyboardist and musical director Lehman served in the trenches of ‘70s and ‘80s rock as a sound engineer and manager while on the road with a bevy of famous rock groups, and lends his awesome keyboard wizardry to the types of music this band is best known for.  Lead singer Royce Jones is a consummate entertainer who adds his velvet vocals to the bands softer numbers, yet can bring the room to its feet while on up tempo Rock classics.  To achieve blazing guitar leads without ever breaking a sweat, the group calls on master lead guitarist Scott White, while veteran musician Scott Williams ably defends his title as the band’s rhythm guitarist (a vanishing breed in today’s rock world).  Together, “The Scotts” as we call them, forge a formidable team that shows you what playing vintage rock guitar is all about.  Bassist and lead singer Bernie Reed projects a unique intensity and joy to his playing and singing styles while drummer Steve Matyas is self taught and has played with many local bands in the early ‘70’s in L.A.

So there you have it.  SCREAMIN’ LEHMAN - an exciting and eclectic mix of the very best in classic rock, offering just the right blend of good time rock n’ roll, soul, R & B, blues, Southern rock, and even the east coast sound. We play the music we love, and we guarantee you’ll love hearing it!

    -MUSICIAN’S BIOGRAPHIES

Keyboardist Steve Lehman was born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles and studied both classical and popular piano. By his late teens he was playing the magnificent Hammond B3 organ inspired by his heroes, Al Kooper and Stevie Winwood.  Lehman played the nightclub circuit during the mid-1960s and recorded with Richie Podolor of Three Dog Night and Steppenwolf production fame. Later, becoming a sound engineer and Production/Tour Manager he toured with Tom Waits, Ray Parker Jr., Mr. Mister and Jose Feliciano and went on to manage Ambrosia and Jaco Pastorius. Steve is a proud member of the Recording Academy and contributes his highly-trained ear and extensive musical experience to this group.

Vocalist  Royce Jones was born and raised in Los Angeles and has been singing for as long as he can remember. His gifted voice first graced choirs in high school and a variety of local bands, after which he was signed to Motown as a background vocalist and then eventually as a solo artist for that label. Royce went on to sing background and some lead vocals for Steely Dan and did two tours with that iconic band. He was later drafted into Ambrosia as a lead/background vocalist  and perform percussion .  Royce also performed in two music videos for Richard Simmons. Royce was brought into Screamin’ Lehman by Steve himself and proudly adds his dynamic song styling and velvety-smooth vocals as the trademark sound of the band.

Rhythm Guitarist Scott Williams, born in Boston and raised in Los Angeles, studied guitar in L.A. before moving up to San Francisco.  He formed Scotty and the Falcons while living in the Bay Area and played in such well-known clubs as the Fillmore and the Avalon. He later joined the Elastik Band (later known as Dangerfield) and was signed to ATCO and then UNI records. After moving back to the L.A.area he helped form a horn band called MAX.  Proud owner of an original 1958 Gibson ES355, Scott is probably one of the best rhythm guitar players in the business today and also plays lead guitar and bass. He and Steve have been friends for more than forty years and his solid playing serves as a valuable asset to Screamin’ Lehman.

Lead guitarist Scott White was born and raised in Southern California. Scott taught himself to play guitar with very little professional training and plays by ear.  He was influenced by British Blues artists such as the Stones, Bluesbreakers and Cream. Later influences were Johnnie Winter, Mountain, Allman Brothers and Lynard Skynard. He considers himself a Blues/Hick. In one of his early band they were the opening act for the Box Tops and the Standells. After the a stint in the Military he played in a group that did the club circuit in the Northern Midwest and made a decent living at it.  After moving back to California White was in a bad accident that damaged several fingers and his arm. He was not able to pickup a guitar until about three years ago. Steve placed and ad for a lead guitar player and Scott answered the ad and was recruited into Screamin’ Lehman.

Bass guitarist and Lead Vocalist Bernie Reed is also a Los Angeles native. Starting at an early age, he studied guitar and then switched to bass when he got into high school. Bernie played in several high school rock bands including the one in which he met Steve, and after high school pursued a solo vocal career and was eventually signed to Chrysalis Records in the late 70's. While his musical roots are planted firmly in rock, Bernie loves to sing all kinds of music including big band standards.  In 2001, Steve and Bernie met once again at a small reunion party where Steve suggested putting a band together, thus forming the seedlings for this group. Bernie’s bass collection includes a 1961 Danelectro and a stunning new fender Jazz Bass.

Drummer Steve Matyas is also a Los Angeles native. Inspired by the watching the first appearance of the Beatles, and especially by Ringo Starr on the Ed Sullivan Show, Steve has been a drummer ever since. Fast-forward several years later - while playing with a top 40 group at the Disneyland Hotel, Steve hopped a ride on the monorail into the park to witness the magic of Buddy Rich playing with his big band and was inspired once more. As a result, he has been a fan of most music styles to this day, and has been involved with an array of diverse musicians and music. So, from Ringo to Rich, and with many years of experience, Steve once again shares his talents and knowledge with this group of dedicated musicians
